“At night the letters will turn white and shine light” – Monument Ahmet Benler

Ter ere van Ahmet Benler is er in de afgelopen dagen een herdenkingsmonument geplaatst bij de Turkse ambassade in Nederland.

Ahmet Benler, de zoon van de toenmalige Turkse ambassadeur, werd in 1979 in Den Haag om het leven gebracht door de Armeense terreurorganisatie ASALA (geheime leger voor de bevrijding van Armenië). ASALA is verantwoordelijk voor de moord op tientallen Turkse diplomaten en zakenmannen.

Benler stond bekend als een intelligente jongen. Zijn auto werd beschoten bij een stoplicht toen hij onderweg was naar de universiteit waar hij studeerde. Hij overleed ter plekke.

De monument is onthuld op 18 maart waar de martelaren worden herdacht van de Slag om Gallipoli in 1915.

De Turkse ambassadeur Sadik Arslan vertelt dat de Turkse bevolking veel gebeurtenissen heeft doorstaan. “We streven altijd naar vrede, hoe erg de gebeurtenissen ook zijn. Mijn gedachten gaan uit naar iedereen die heeft gestreden voor ons volk”, aldus Arslan.

Namens Turkings, de Turkse Architecten en Ingenieurs Vereniging, en Bina Bouwadvies nam architect Muhsin Sağdıç het woord en eindigde de ceremonie met de volgende brief:

First of all I wish the mercy of God to all our martyrs, and the well-being of the ones who were left behind.

I want to thank our Ambassador,
and all who participated from the embassy.

I want to thank Turkings, the foundation for Turkish engineers and architects in Holland for bringing this on our path.

I also want to thank the Den Haag municipality and all who has put effort in making this memorial.

I want to thank our families and everyone else who gave us strength with their prayers.

We realize that all who have fallen for their country deserve more than this.
But it comes from our hart and we are proud to be part of it.

At daytime the letters are black
But at night, when the world symbolically commemorates our martyrs, the letters will turn white and shine light.
